Thoreau said “It is not a man's duty, as a matter of course, to devote himself to the eradication of any, even the most enormous wrong; he may still properly have other concerns to engage him; but it is his duty, at least, to wash his hands of it, and, if he gives it no thought longer, not to give it practically his support. If I devote myself to other pursuits and contemplations, I must first see, at least, that I do not pursue them sitting upon another man's shoulders.”
Well... I sort of agree with him, sort of not. He said “It is not a man's duty...” I say “It should not be a man's duty...”
But then again, when there are enormous wrongs that are there right in front of your very eyes, and the leaders that be do not do anything about those enormous wrongs, whose duty is it going to be but yours or mine? I would like to devote myself to other pursuits and contemplations, but this injustice does not let me. We should stop these starfishes washing ashore. Humanity is adrift.
I am happy, I have lived my life, I guess I have realized all my personal desires, I can now devote myself to changing the world for the better. I believe I have accumulated experience and knowledge as well. It would be a shame to let it sit idly.
Thoreau also said "I have other affairs to attend to. I came into this world, not chiefly to make this a good place to live in, but to live in it, be it good or bad.”
With all due respect, I am rephrasing him:
I have other affairs to attend to, too. I came into this world, maybe not chiefly, but also to make this a good place to live in. Sure, I came to live in it, be it good or bad. But be it good is better than be it bad.
A friend of mine was saying he feared WW III; he sneered “And you are talking about the future...”
I have a child. I need to talk about the future. I need to have hope. We all do.
What I want to do
I will be going to every country in the world only to burn my passports even if not a single soul in this world cares about it. Yet, I'm sure there are people out there who care. I consider them as family. I'm curious as to how big a family I have. I would also like to meet my family members.
