How Did The Idea Originate? |
What I want to do
|
I came up with the idea of travelling to every country in the world to burn my passports right before beginning my third round-the-world tour. A travel newspaper had wanted to make an interview and I realized I didn't want to give travel interviews. Or rather, I could no longer give the usual travel interviews as I was not interested in making a name for myself or promoting my books, my concern was totally different now.
The idea sprang up, but it was too ambitious. I was to toy around with it. To me, it was one of those “for fun” ideas, an “amusing” idea for the brain to stretch and exercise. Then, about the end of the tour, a book, Albert Podell's “Around the World in 50 Years” ended up/was placed in my hands. Reading it, the idea took root. With so many questions of course. I had a small child now, gone were the carefree bachelor days where I could risk my life and play Russian roulette with it by going to Northwest Africa. Thinking it was time to start disattachment from my daughter, I went to Romania for a night. Then I took the chance to go to North Korea for a week. Before these, I had set my eyes on a Caribbean & Amazon trip and had made reservations. So I thought it would be a good idea to clear the countries in the Caribbean while we were there. Thus came the other plans. If all goes as planned, I should have done 12 new countries by the end of this year. Next would be the easier ones like Cyprus, (I've been to the North, but that's not a country!) and the small bites in Europe: Andorra, Liechtenstein and Montenegro. Then there are the Maldives and Seychelles and Madagascar. There are the Stans and Bhutan etc. I might be doing those sort of okay. The rest? Well... I do these and we see what comes up. I said I'd be doing this even if not a single soul in the world cared and I will. However, now I realize it won't be so easy. I also said I have money and I do, but it won't be enough to do the countries that are left. Naturally, the ones that are left are the sort of harder or farther ones that cost to fly and to travel. Again naturally, I don't want this project to take too long. Otherwise, there wouldn't be any point to it. I personally am not in any special hurry to see the whole world, it's just that thousands of people are dying and suffering day in day out and if this project could help anything it would better be finished quick. Who knows how many countries might be springing up in a decade, who knows how the migrant situation might be? So, things depend on if anybody is interested in my project. If I find a sponsor, things would be different than doing it on my own. I have the motivation, and as I know myself, I won't give up. However, it might be taking more time than it should. We see what life brings... |
I will be going to every country in the world only to burn my passports even if not a single soul in this world cares about it. Yet, I'm sure there are people out there who care. I consider them as family. I'm curious as to how big a family I have. I would also like to meet my family members. Join the League of Unreasonable Minds
