On the Taxation System
Just like the first question that is asked most to me about travelling the world, the first question people ask when I say “Everybody should be free to go wherever they want” is “Where do you find the money from?” After all, all these people need to be fed, accommodated, educated, there are the health services they'd use, there is the social security etc.
The answer is simple: From the same place where we find the money to spend on all the border controls, all the salaries of immigration officers and police, all the expenditures for all the advanced equipment, to put up walls and fences... You just channel the money you spend on controls on the people. Voilà! The problem is solved. According to the migration researcher, professor Hein de Haas, we spend 1 billion euros a year to keep “them” out, the refugees and/or economic migrants spend another billion euros to get in. Now tell me how does this make sense??! It's all such a huge WASTE of resources.
And the reason? Immigration laws and visa regulations and sanctions.
And who wastes all those resources and/or who makes people waste so much money on smugglers just to move from one place to another? Governments. Of course it's easy to waste money that you have not earned yourself. So coming to the main point...
The taxation system needs to change.
I am not giving my consent to any government to build walls, to pay immigration officers salaries on my name using the tax money they get from me. I am not. So what does this make the government? What do you call someone who gets money from you and spends it on your behalf on things you do not morally agree?
Some people say taxation is theft. I am inclined to agree but I'm not going to argue that. I am even fine with governments getting money from me. Even getting as much money as they dictate. However, I am NOT FINE with them spending that money on things that I do not approve of. Sorry, I am not.
So here is my suggestion:
I give money, I pay taxes, even as much as they want, but I will dictate where every cent of it is going to go to. If there is anybody who wants to pay for controls, for the salaries of immigration officers, for erecting walls, let them. There are people who feel more comfortable and secure that way. Anybody who wants to give money to soldiers, let them give it. Anybody who wants to pay for the security equipment at airports, to put security officers here there and everywhere on a salary, help yourself. But don't oblige me to do the same.
I'm sure we are technologically advanced enough to set up an online taxation system where the governments can make calculations and put up the money needed for certain causes so that the people can go and distribute their taxes according to where they believe money should be spent. They make a list of expenditures and how much is needed for what. Then, people go online and pay their taxes distributing it to causes they see worth. It's that simple.
My proposal is partially put into action in Italy. You may give 5 per thousand of your due tax to any NGO of your wish. I don't see any reason for it not to be a 1000 per thousand.
“There will be things nobody will pay for.”
“Like what?... If it is something that needs to be done, believe me, there will be people willing to put their money on it. And if they do not, that means it's not really worth it. I may not give a cent for the military but there are loads of people out there who will be putting all their tax money on soldiers. Oh yes sir, I will be interfering with everything, I need to have a say in anything done on my behalf. And I want control over where MY money is spent on. Sorry... But you don't need to worry, not everybody is like me. People do not mind, do not want to be involved with such banalistic matters. They prefer to just give the money and let others think about it. They prefer not to touch soap and water, to keep their head's down, their nose clean. So fine. You won't be left without any resource for things you think needs to be done. I mean not everybody uses the 5 per thousand for a cause they care about. If you don't say anything, the state gives it to the Church.
The important thing is you know and have control over what they do with your money. At least the people who are capable of knowing do. The majority of the population will not bother even if they can have a say over the 1000 per thousand of their taxes. Whereas it's very important to decide what to do with money. Today, governments use it for all sorts of plunder. It all ends up with money. You cut out the money, you make a blow to their livelihood. You control the money, you control the government. At least up to a certain point. Otherwise, the government controls you.”
The saying goes like “He who pays the piper plays the tune.” Whereas we pay, I mean they (the governments that is) get the money from us by force, and they get to play the tune themselves. It's a disgrace. There has to be a limit to insolence. They play the tune and you have to be their monkey to dance to their tune. If you are the one to pay, you at least get to play the tune. And this can only be achieved when the people get to decide where their money needs to go.
