Living On Donations
November 8, 2016
It's interesting... To see that the newspapers themselves are coming to the place we, -or let me talk only on my behalf,- to the place I, as a writer, was. I had opened up The Guardian to follow the US Elections. At the end of the article, it said: "Since you're here ... ...we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading the Guardian than ever but far fewer are paying for it. And advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. The Guardian's independent, investigative journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too. If everyone who reads our reporting – who believes in it – helps to support it, our future would be more secure. Give to the Guardian by becoming a Supporter or by making a one-off contribution." The economy is going to be changing whether we like it or not. It is changing. The internet has set off globalization, it is changing the economy as well. Free or Paid? How is it going to be? How should it be? Or is everybody going to be living on donations? Are people going to be patrons instead of customers? |
