Give it to Somebody Else
Note: The following will only be clear if you have read the piece On Money You may find the idea stupid, you may not want to do it yourself, and for most this is not possible at this point anyway, as someone needs to give them their salary too and there is no such person at this point. I start the game. You give the money that I should be earning to someone else. No publisher, even the big ones, ever paid me without legal warning or my asking for it several times anyway. I'm not talking about an extra money, something extraordinary, they didn't pay the money they promised to pay by the standard contract they prepared on their own terms. No one (bar one) whom I lent money paid me back without my having to literally beg for it. I (we that is. But as it is in Turkey, I happen to have my name on the title deed.) recently bought a house with a tenant in it, she is not paying the rent. Either I am jinxed or there are way too many people who do not pay what they owe. (Or of course this was all a setup for me to come up with and feel strongly about advocating this idea!) I shouldn't be unfair. During the ten years I worked at the university, the government paid my salary on time but that doesn't really count I suppose. As it doesn't pay with the money it earns but with the money it collects at gunpoint. Apart from that, the only person who gave me any money for my labor was my husband. One day, feeling worthless, that I had become a housewife after being the free and carefree woman I was for so many years. My husband went out to work and made money.: whereas I was stuck at home. Nobody found my existence worthwhile to pay me. That evening, when he came home, I pontificated. I said it was just unfair, I was doing all the work in the house, cooking, cleaning, washing, raising the baby. I contributed equally to the quality of our life as a family. I deserved, even if not half, one-third of his salary. I claimed that he needed to pay me. The next day, he came back home with a wad of cash! And I said “Get lost!” What do I do getting the money out of his pocket into mine? Whenever I need it, I tell him and he brings it to me. It's a nice deal. Money should be like that. Just in time production. With zero stock. Or okay, as little as possible stock. What's the point of stacking it up? Now... Coming to the thing I do apart from the housewife. That is, writing... Eh, as I said, we live in a world where paying for writing is considered a sin. I mean of course some people get paid for writing, maybe it's because what I write is not worth a hill of beans, that's why. Whatever... I don't want to give out the product of my mind labor for free. These are things I put my time, my life on. They are precious to me. I want to be able to make some money too. Just to see I can. Just to see that somebody finds it worth paying money for. Not that I need it. So what do I do? You can give it to somebody else. Coming to the point... The proposal is this: You pay the price of the book to IHF, which by far is my favorite NGO, or to anyone you know in need. Or better yet, to someone who is not from your country, you know one of those people that bother you on the street asking for money. Give it to them. If you must, talk to them first. Find out about their lives, realize that they are humans. And download the books only AFTER you have paid someone else on my behalf. (The prices quoted are only suggestions. Please feel free to give more. Or if you don't have the means, of course you don't need to feel obliged to pay anything.) Yeah, I know, I could have said “All proceedings of these books are going to go here, will be donated to these charities etc.” But I don't want to do that. First, I don't want to do the agent between one agency and people. Second, I would like people to take responsibility on themselves. Third, I would like the money to be distributed more randomly. Whatever... I've got nothing to lose. And I don't expect to get anything in return. I'm not sure the world will gain anything out of it either, but who knows... Maybe it will. |

These books ARE free. Because they are one of those “Plant a different seed” books and the idea needs to spread around. So I distribute those seeds for free. But the moment you decide to get one, you have the responsibility to water the seed.
These books are expensive because they are NOT for profit. It's an excuse to do some good for someone... And that is invaluable. Ending Statelessness or Ending Statehood?
