I said I was quitting writing, I would not be writing anything on the US Elections either, that everybody would be commenting anyway and that I didn't want to be a part of the noise. I am taking my word back. Trump became the president of the US of A! Last night, I wanted to have a look at how things were going. Even though there wasn't anything special on the news about who was leading, the last tweets and news favored Hillary. There was no reason for concern. Even though I would have preferred someone else apart from the two candidates, “They will have the first woman president after the first black president,” I thought to myself. Nice. This morning, I didn't even bother to check the news. I had errands to run. It had been a while after we got back home, I was working. I heard Carlo say “Trump won.” He said it so matter of factly.
I said “You are joking.” He said “No, I am not.” I went over to his desk and kneeled over to have a look at the news. He wasn't joking. So now I had some reading to do. I had to go and see what people were saying. It was going to be fun. Or rather a bitter kind of fun. When I went to pick up Lara (my five-year old) from school I told her “Do you know what happened today? They voted Donald Trump as president. Trump is the president of the United States of America.” Last month, a very famous Turkish showman, a talk show host with 6.1 million followers had started following me on Twitter. I went through the whole day repeating “Okan Bayülgen is following me. Okan Bayülgen is following me.” I was incredulous. So today is another such day. This time I'm going around saying “They chose Trump as president. Trump is the president of America.” Last time Lara had asked “Why is Okan Bayülgen following you?” I said I didn't know. People followed others for different reasons. Perhaps he was interested in my ideas and mission, perhaps it was just because I had done three round-the-world tours and he was interested in travellers. I am hoping he might one day get me on his show. Even though I have no interest in being in the media, I have to get on such a show if I want my ideas to spread. This time Lara didn't ask “Why did they choose Trump as president?” I wouldn't have known what to answer. Perhaps it's because Americans do not want foreigners in their land and Trump is against immigration. Or perhaps it's simply because people are tired of the classic politicians going around with the same rhetoric that sucks. Perhaps they wanted to give the presidency to somebody who was not a part of that world. Who knows? The only good that might be coming from Trump being president is that he may be less ready than Clinton to get into wars. If that's any consolation... Or it may help you improve your sarcasm skills, force you to find a bright side of things. I know... It will take lots of effort! PS: To help you find the bright side, sing along Eric Idle, from "Monty Python's Life of Brian" Some things in life are bad, They can really make you mad. Other things just make you swear and curse. When you're chewing on life's gristle, Don't grumble, give a whistle! And this'll help things turn out for the best PPS: What's the lesson to be learnt?
