I wrote a piece on Counting Countries with the intention of provoking some thought on the oneness of the world and the goal of travel. Then I saw travellers still squabbling, squabbling over who is the better traveller or which number (as the number of countries or places to visit varies according to which travel club you belong to) you should be aiming for in order to be the better traveller. It really despairs me... It despairs me how people are so horse-sighted, so egocentrical. And these are supposed to be world travellers! They have learnt nothing, I repeat, NOTHING from all their travels. They are just as shallow as they have started out.
Ric, who has a podcast on counting countries interviewing travellers aiming for 193, told me I was too much vested in the discussions of travellers. It may seem like that on the surface, but that falls short of the truth; what I am vested in is finding one more of me in the travel community, one more person who thinks like me, who sees the world broken into countries by imaginary lines as an anomaly; what I am vested in is to see if I can put a question mark in one more person about borders, about the division of people into citizens/nationals.
In her talk “How to find a tribe that loves your art” Heather Dale tells of how she walked into a room full of history geeks who were sword fighting and doing medieval events and upon seeing them she exclaimed:
“Oh my God, there is more of us!”
I am looking for that moment I will feel and say the same thing. At least to see that there is one more of me. I am vested in finding that one person. That one person who cares. Who cares deeply about what I care deeply.
Like medieval knights, I hold some values high. I believe in personal integrity, basic decency, courage to speak up to say what one thinks, being true to your word, capacity of logic and reason... I foster these values in myself and want to show it to the world that they are worth pursuing.
I am looking for people who understand the things that mean something to me. But I suppose I cannot find them in this bunch. Is it really possible to travel to every country in the world, have a blog and not talk one word about security searches and the idiocy of it, visa troubles and the unfairness of it?
If you know of anyone other than me, could you please direct me to them, or them to me?
