Conflict here, conflict there. Conflict is everywhere in this world.
I was thinking/feeling I was the only one who kept getting into conflicts all the time. I was blaming myself for probably doing something wrong.
No no, it's not only me. Humans are not made to get along with each other. The world is full of people in conflict. The courts are full of the stupidest conflicts that two people couldn't sort out by themselves. Even supposedly “smart” people can't solve their conflicts. Countries keep fighting, the “leaders” of the world powers keep hurling threats. What do you expect? A fish rots from the head down. Or that's human nature and ubiquitous in every place, in every layer of society.
Roger Waters published a message on Facebook on May 18th. I'm not going to take sides on the Israeli-Palestenian conflict even if I am on the side of the Palestinians in principle. What I want to discuss is the mentality behind some specific approaches.
The Israeli army has enough bullets for everyone. If every man, woman and child in Gaza gathers at the gate, there is a bullet for every one of them. They can all be killed, no problem.” Avi Dichter, a senior member of the Israeli parliament
Israeli demographer Arnon Soffer of Haifa University advised to seal the territory off from the outside world and to simply shoot anyone who tried to break out. “When 2.5 million people live in a closed-off Gaza, it’s going to be a human catastrophe. The pressure at the border will be awful. It’s going to be a terrible war. So, if we want to remain alive, we will have to kill and kill and kill. All day, every day, the only thing that concerns me is how to ensure that the boys and men who are going to have to do the killing will be able to return home to their families and be normal human beings,” he said.
He cannot ensure that. It’s impossible. It’s impossible for any normal human being to stay “normal” even witnessing such cruelty from far away, from a distance of the news in our white screens… Let alone someone having to actually witness the killing, let alone someone having to actually do the killing.
The Jewish Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel said when accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986:
“I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”
Yes, the silence of people against the injustice at birth, against birthplace racism, against global apartheid is really DEAFENING!
The Silence Is Deafening...
